Imaging equipment is advancing to closely track radiation doses

A recent Consumer Reports article encourages patients to ask questions before undergoing computed tomography (CT) scans and X-rays so they can guard against excessive radiation exposure and track their X-ray dosage.

The report notes that the number of CT scans has grown from fewer than 3 million in 1980 to more than 80 million, and recent research suggests that about a third of those tests are unnecessary.

While there is no evidence that radiation from diagnostic or interventional x-rays causes cancer, some studies of large populations exposed to radiation have demonstrated slight increases in cancer risk even at low levels of radiation exposure, particularly in children, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
